Australian sea lions (ASL) are protected by the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999. The Australian sea lion Gillnet Exclusion Zones (Zones) are the latest changes in WA to address concerns about ASLs.
Waters within the Zones will be closed to gillnet fishing by commercial demersal gillnet and demersal longline operators, however fishers will still be able to use gillnets outside these Zones.
The Zones have been established to reduce the risk of ASLs interacting with demersal gillnets when foraging around their breeding colonies and to maintain a viable commercial fishery.
